A Smoked feast for the Senses featuring Matt Suess
Words and Photos by Matt Suess, OM Systems Ambassador and Platypod Pro

"For this fun photo challenge, I decided to cook my 'world-famous' smoked reverse sear boneless ribeye steak."
"I used a beautiful 1.3lb steak along with a variety of colorful potatoes, local mixed carrots, onion, peppers, and of course some local corn on the cob."
"The steak was smoked low-and-slow until the internal temperature reached the mid 80’s. Then I cranked up the heat and fire in my smoker to over 500 degrees to let the flames lick each side of the steak, pulling it at the right moment to leave me with a medium rare cook."
"The worst part of this photo shoot was when I got to finally taste the results after finishing the photos – the steak had cooled down quite a bit. But wow did that smoke and char flavor shine through!!"
"For the indoor photos, I used the top of my standalone freezer as my photo studio. Fixed atop one of my Platypod eXtremes, I positioned my Platypod Elbow which I then attached it to a LumeCube light. On the other I used the Platypod Handle and Platyball Elite ballhead to hold my OM SYSTEM camera.
I decided to only use one light, mostly at a low angle, throughout the shoot, feeling it would give me the dramatic light I wanted to achieve to match the smoked steak and fire from the grill. And when I photograph food, I love to shoot super tight, to bring the viewer right into the meal."
"If only these photos contained a scratch-n-sniff feature so you could get the full effect…"
