Capturing the Northern Lights in Lofoten with the Platypod Delta
As a professional photographer specializing in capturing the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis, I’m always on the lookout for innovative tools to make my work more efficient and creative. When I first got my hands on the new Platypod Delta, I knew it was going to be a game-changer—and it didn’t disappoint.
Why the Platypod Delta Stood Out in Lofoten
The Lofoten Islands in Norway are a photographer’s paradise. Rugged peaks, pristine fjords, and the ever-elusive northern lights provide endless opportunities—but the challenging terrain demands versatile and reliable gear. The Platypod Delta fits perfectly into this environment.
Key Features That Made a Difference
- Low Profile for Unique Angles: The Delta’s flat, compact design allowed me to set up my camera at water level to capture reflections of the aurora dancing across the fjords. Unlike a traditional tripod, the Delta’s stability on uneven rocks and icy surfaces gave me confidence to shoot without worry.
- Built-in Spikes for Stability: On a windy night at Uttakleiv Beach, the integrated spikes anchored the Delta securely into the sand. Despite the gusts, my camera remained steady, and I captured some of my sharpest long-exposure shots of the aurora.
- Strap Slots for Creative Mounting: Near Reine, I strapped the Delta to a wooden pole to position my camera at an unusual height, framing the village beneath the swirling green lights. This feature unlocked new perspectives I hadn’t explored before.
- Lightweight and Portable: Lofoten often involves a lot of hiking. The Delta’s lightweight design made it easy to carry, even during long treks to remote locations like the Norwegian fjords. It slipped effortlessly into my bag without adding bulk, leaving room for other essentials.
A Night to Remember
One of the most memorable nights with the Platypod Delta was at Gimsøya. The sky exploded with a vivid auroral display, and I used the Delta to stabilize my camera for a series of panoramic shots. Its low profile let me compose images that included foreground elements like snow-covered rocks and icy patterns, adding depth to the scenes.
Why Every Photographer Needs the Platypod Delta
The Delta isn’t just another piece of gear—it’s a tool that adapts to your creativity and the demands of your environment. Whether you're a landscape photographer shooting in rugged terrains or a travel photographer needing lightweight, versatile equipment, the Delta delivers.
For me, it was the perfect companion in Lofoten, helping me push the boundaries of my photography and capture moments I’ll cherish forever.
